It’s officially tax season and that means everyone is scrambling to get their returns ready. Most folks may even qualify for free return services based on their individual circumstances.

For example, military members and their families have an array of different filing services that are offered at no charge, so that they can prepare their taxes:

  • Turbo Tax: For a limited time, E-1 to E-5 service members can prepare and file their Federal and State returns for free.

  • Tax Slayer: Service members and their families can file their Federal and State returns online for free using their Military Edition.

If you are not military affiliated, there are still other options for you to file for free:

  • The IRS’s Free File system lets everyone file their taxes for free, providing that they have an AGI of $57,000 or less.

  • Most online software programs such as Turbo Tax, TaxACT, and H&R Block will allow you to prepare your returns for free, although there may be a charge for e-filing.

  • Turbo Tax’s Freedom Edition will allow you to file absolutely free if you qualify under certain conditions.

  • The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance(VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly(TCE) Programs both offer free services to those who qualify.

Many other individual State and Counties may also offer tax services at no charge. I highly recommend checking within your own geographical area to see what’s available to you.
