Christian music has come such a long way while branching out into so many different genres. You're bound to find something that you like no matter what your preference is. Being a fan of music all my life and living in a home with musicians (including myself), I've always had a true love and appreciation for all kinds of sounds. If someone had the chance to preview my Ipod, they'd be surprised to hear the eclectic selection of tunes I have on there.
When I was first introduced to Christian contemporary music, I was immediately drawn to several popular artists such as Jaci Velasquez, Plumb, Crystal Lewis, and Point of Grace. Also being a fan of rock, I typically enjoyed bands like Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and of course DC Talk. When I first heard the news that former DC Talk band member, TobyMac, would be releasing his sixth studio album debut, This is Not a Test, I jumped at the opportunity to get a sneak peek. Not only do I enjoy rock and pop, but I also like to throw in a little bit of hip-hop and dance here and there.
Toby McKeehan (known professionally as TobyMac) is a husband, father, performer, songwriter, producer, and businessman. Growing up in the northern Virginia suburbs adjacent to Washington D.C. helped instill his love for rap music. While attending Liberty University during the mid 80s, Toby met Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith and these three friends formed the Grammy winning, platinum selling group dc Talk. Toby began his solo career in 1999 with his first solo album, Momentum, releasing in 2001. Momentum has been followed by four additional studio albums, Welcome to Diverse City (2004), Portable Sounds (2007), Tonight (2010), and Eye On It (2012), along with his first live album, Alive and Transported (2008). This is Not a Test is his 6th studio album to be released. Starting with dc Talk, and then going solo when the group disbanded, Toby still clings to such rootsy notions as hard work, persistence, patience, and - perhaps most relevant of all - the power of music, which he insists is still what keeps him going. "It's the truth," he says. "I still believe that a song can penetrate a heart. I believe God can use a song to open someone's mind and heart."
What I really like about TobyMac's music is that it's always catchy and upbeat; the kind of music that really gets me going. Sometimes I'm in the mood for something more relaxing, but other times I like to listen to music that just gets me in a groove. That's exactly what This is Not a Test does. Each and every song on the album offers fun beats with a lot of rhythm. It's the perfect soundtrack for working out or getting stuff done around the house. You're definitely going to want to turn up the bass for this one. Let's not forget about the lyrics. TobyMac has always done an amazing job at getting his message of faith across. This new album makes no exception to that. The lyrics in each song are powerful and heartfelt, so not only do the actual melodies get you moving, but the words do, too.
This is Not a Test (Deluxe Version) contains four additional tracks, Lift You Up, Fall, Beyond Me (Phenonmenon Remix by Soul Glow Activatur) and Like A Match (Garcia's Remix):
Each and every song on this album is a hit in my book, but I do have a few favorites. Lights Shine Bright featuring Hollyn offers a smooth reggae tempo, which I really liked. Love Broke Through is another great song that offers a catchy melodic chorus that keeps me singing along. Devoted fans of DC Talk are going to enjoy Love Feels Like, another awesome song that features a reunion of the band. I especially enjoyed Till the Day I Die. This is one of the first songs that I had the chance to listen to on the album, and it stills grabs me the most.
"It's runnin' deeper than the ocean
This ain't religion, it's devotion
365, every minute, everyday
So in the middle of the madness
They can stretch me out like canvas
But I ain't ever gonna fit in their frame"
TobyMac's This is Not a Test, offers a hip approach in projecting the powerful message of God's love and the importance of our faith in Him. The album is really going to appeal to younger generations, but at the same time it offers something that people of all ages are going to enjoy.
This is Not a Test officially releases on August 7, 2015, but fans can pre-order the album on iTunes, and actually receive four tracks instantly.
