Book Review: The Berenstain Bears School Time Blessings by Mike Berenstain

The Berenstain Bears are a timeless classic. As a child, I personally enjoyed reading these books, so it's nice to see that Mike Berenstain is following in his parents footsteps by continuing to create stories of this beloved bear family. We recently got a sneak peak of the newest upcoming release, The Berenstain Bears School Time Blessings.

First, I know what you must be thinking, "School time? But we are just finishing up the school year." Many if not most of us are getting ready to enjoy the warm summer months–I know that we are! At the same time, they are short. This means the new school year will be here before we know it. Whether you have children who are just entering school for the very first time or ones who have already been in for a few years, The Berenstain Bears School Time Blessings is the perfect book for them to read right before they begin their new school year.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
It’s time for the new school year to begin and all three Bear cubs are excited and a little nervous too. When challenges and fears almost get the better of the cubs, Mama and Papa step in and remind Brother, Sister, and Honey that with their support, prayer, and God’s love they will each have a great year!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from the family home and studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

Shortly after we received the book, my son and I snuggled up to read it. There is a moderate amount of text to read, so it may be a bit of a challenge for beginner readers. Since my little one is still quite young, I just read it to him anyway. Although he has some time before he actually starts school, the lessons taught in the story are truly valuable no matter a child's age.

The Berenstain cubs are getting ready for a new school year. Little Honey is starting nursery school, and is worried about being away from her parents. Brother and Sister who are older have different worries about going back to school. Brother is dreading his math class, because he just cant stomach all of those numbers, decimal points, and fractions. Sister is not looking forward to her history class and having to remember people, places, and dates that don't seem very relevant to her.

Each cub brings his or her concerns to their parents and is offered some valuable advice straight from the Bible:

I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears." Pslam 34:4

With this verse in mind, the three cubs each find a way to ease their worries. I won't give too much away, but let's just say the story continues on with the bear cubs discovering some sound ideas to overcome the trials they face.

The Berenstain Bears School Time Blessings is part of the Living Lights series. Not only is the book full of positive messages, but the back also offers a collection of activities and questions for children to do. The story, itself, teaches children of all ages that no matter what challenges or worries they may face, God and family are there to help them through.

This would be a great book for my nine year old son. They're doing things differently next year, so he might not end up with the teacher we want. This book would be a good reminder for him, and for me, that God will help us.

Thank you for sharing, Brenda! Change can be difficult, but not always a bad thing. The story offers a gentle reminder for children to seek God when they are unsure or worried about something. It could possibly offer some encouragement to your son. The book is set to release around June 21st. :-)
