We are getting more and more excited about Christmas as the season draws near. I just love this time of the year and all the fun it brings. We have also been enjoying some very special holiday books to really get us in the spirit of Christmas, like the new Where Jesus Slept by Norma Lewis.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
“This is the bed where Jesus slept. This is the straw that lined the bed where Jesus slept.” From here, the story builds with each spread, adding a new element and explaining the relationships among the participants and witnesses to the first Christmas. From Jesus sleeping sweetly to the wise men bringing gifts, this charming book reminds readers young and not-so-young of the joyous event we celebrate at Christmastime. Children will love the delightful illustrations and the engaging repetition in this cumulative tale.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Norma Lewis is the author of ten books. She lives in Grand Haven, MI, with a marmalade cat named Scalawag. They both love spending time with her six grandchildren, ranging in age from three to twenty.
I absolutely love this book and we've been having so much fun reading it! You see the story starts out with "This is the bed where Jesus slept" then each page adds a new line like "This is the straw that lined the bed" followed by part of the first line "where Jesus slept." The next page offers a new line, followed by the last line, and ultimately ending with "where Jesus slept." This pattern goes on through the whole story where each page starts with a new part of the story, then continues on with previous lines from past pages, and ultimately ending with "where Jesus sleep."
I'm truly amazed with my son's memory, especially for a little guy. As we read Where Jesus Slept, he actually remembers that the last lines of each page are repeats from the previous pages. When we get to the final three or four lines of every page, he gets so excited to help me finish reading them. It's so much fun that we actually make a game of it, and he always asks me to read it over again after we're done. Of course, I don't mind, because this is such a nice book about the birth of our Savior.
Since it's physically large all around (the perfect size for a picture book), kids can take in all of the gorgeous illustrations done by Katy Hudson, as they show the miracle of that special night. Not only does it offer children a heartwarming glimpse into the night of Jesus' birth with beautiful artwork, but they can also help finish off each line in the story, thanks to the fun repetition of prose. Where Jesus Slept is a definite must for the holiday season and I'm happy to be sharing it here on my blog.
Even better news! One Our Everyday Harvest reader is going to win a copy of Where Jesus Slept, so they can share the wondrous story of our Savior's birth with the children in their life!
