The Bible is full of many uplifting words, but the Psalms are one collection of scripture passages that always seem to stand out for me when seeking that extra bit of encouragement. Psalm 91 is one of my favorites to read–another is Psalm 23, which offers a precious message of hope and is the perfect example of how much the Lord cares for us.
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
God is all we need and He's right there beside us. What a wonderful reminder to everyone, especially little children. Recently, we've been reading a new board book by Sally Lloyd-Jones, called Found, that actually brings Psalm 23 to life, so little ones can truly understand its significance.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
From the bestselling The Jesus Storybook Bible, with over two million products sold, comes Found based on Psalm 23. Written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by Jago, little ones will fall in love with this padded cover board book that reminds them of God’s Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sally Lloyd-Jones is a leading writer of inspirational books for children. She is the author of three bestselling children’s Bibles, including the Moonbeam Award winner and ALA notable The Jesus Storybook Bible, as well as Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing, winner of the ECPA Inspirational Book award. She has written many picture books for children, such as the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller How to Be a Baby: By Me, the Big Sister and Song of the Stars. Sally was born and raised in Africa, was schooled in England, and now lives in New York City.
As soon as I saw the cover of this book, it immediately intrigued me, even before I realized that the story was about Psalm 23. I really like the beautiful artwork put together by illustrator, Jago. He did a wonderful job with this book. I think some of my favorite aspects are the shading and color tones that are used in an assortment of greens, grays, oranges, and blues. Throughout we see Jesus tending to His flock of sheep and one little lamb that is the highlight of the story–a representation of each child who reads this book.
Each line of text is short and sweet for young children and beginning readers. The words are actually a paraphrased version of Psalm 23. As little ones read along, they can be comforted by the sweet reminder written in Psalm 23, that we are the Lord's children–He provides for us, feeds us, guides us, and looks after all of our needs. Even through our most troubling times, the Lord is right there watching over us, so we do not need to be afraid, instead we can have peace and comfort in our hearts, knowing this. No matter where we are, he is there beside us, giving us an overabundance of hope and courage. It's because of this that we are to keep God in our hearts, knowing that he will always be right there loving and caring for us no matter what.
What I just mentioned above is my own paraphrase of Psalm 23, and it gives you an idea of what this book is about and the message it sends to little ones on how special they are to God, and how He is there to tend to their needs and look after them, just as a good Shepard does for His flock. Found is a beautiful book and one that I definitely recommend sharing with the children in your life!
