The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit and Ultra Safe Safety Scissors {Review and GIVEAWAY}

Pin It

I'm always on the look out for the latest and greatest tools that will help my son with developing various skills. Recently, we've been working with two exclusive products from The Pencil Grip, Inc., The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors and The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit. The original Pencil Grip was created by educational therapist, Dr. Lois Provda, back in 1992. Fast forward today, and the company now offers quite the collection of unique tools for both home and school.

I was first introduced to The Pencil Grip Original at a homeschool fair a couple of years ago. While, we didn't need it at the time, the demonstration was enough to convince me that this might be something that could possibly come in handy down the line. The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit was a bit new to me, since it includes not one, but three completely different types of grips. Each grip also works to accommodate both right-handed and left-handed writers. The whole idea behind this three-part system is to gradually move from one to the next, as better control of a writing tool is achieved.

The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit Includes:
  • The Crossover Grip
  • The Pinch Grip
  • The Pencil Grip Original

Step one is to start with The Crossover Grip. This one actually has the "super hero cape" feature, which is basically an extra winged flap that allows the fingers to rest in position. This helps train new writers on proper hand and finger positioning.

Step two is The Pinch Grip which has a slightly smaller winged flap. This allows the writer to have more freedom, so their fingers are not as restricted by the "super hero cape." At the same time, it still offers a guide for better structure .

Step three is the final stage and this is where The Pencil Grip Original comes into play. While there is still some guided control on finger positioning, this one allows more freedom, coupled with a comfortable extended writing experience.

It's also important to note that these steps are only a recommendation by the company. The grips can be used in any order depending on the writer's preference. My son tried all three, but actually seemed to gravitate more towards The Pencil Grip Original.

When I first taught my son how to hold a pencil, I was pleased to see him immediately take to doing it the correct way. The thing about using these writing tools is that they actually serve a couple of different purposes. The initial concept is to allow for better control for those who are new to writing or may be struggling with proper positioning, which I can say is extremely helpful, since each stage of this kit is brilliantly designed to achieve positive results. One of the other useful aspects is that they really do provide comfort, especially for those who may be find themselves writing for a good length of time. This is actually one of the main reasons why I really like having them on hand. They have a nice ergonomic design made out of a soft, pliable material that's both latex and phthalate free. Even adults can benefit from using these. Like my son, I personally enjoyed using The Pencil Grip Original, since it definitely helps with writing fatigue.

Another neat product that we've been using from The Pencil Grip, Inc. is The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors. We currently own a few different types of scissors, but for safety purposes, I only allow my son to use a specific pair. If you have a young child than you are probably already familiar with the kind that that I'm referring to–the type with the extremely blunt blades. Now these seem to suffice for the most part, but having a pair with sharper blades that's just as safe would definitely come in handy for bigger projects. That's exactly what The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors offer.

The overall design of these scissors is such an innovative concept. While the blades are actually quite sharp, they have a permanent plastic shield over them to prevent children from cutting their fingers. One blade is shorter than the other to allow it to move freely in the plastic casing, while the longer blade offers a rounded tip, so there's no additional risk of injury. The paper is allowed to slip in between the longer blade and plastic shield, offering a precise cut the first time around.

It does take a bit to get used to, but once we got the hang of it, we were off to using these safety scissors in our latest crafts and projects. The handle also offers an ergonomic shape, and there's a training lever that fold outs to make it easier for really young children to use as they continue to develop their fine motor skills.
