Holiday Gift Ideas from Zonderkidz

There's nothing like giving the gift of books. If you're looking for some easy gift giving ideas for the kids, Zonderkidz has plenty of great titles to choose from. Here are two recommended books to consider, one for early readers and another for young coloring enthusiasts!

This retelling of the story of Daniel and the Lions is perfect for children learning to read. Featuring vibrant art from the beloved The Beginner’s Bible, this I Can Read!™ book will show children how God protected Daniel in the lions’ den.

We just love the Beginner's Bible books! From beginner Bibles to storybooks, this series has it all. Earlier this year we had the chance to read the board book version of Daniel and the Hungry Lions. We've recently graduated to an early reader version called Daniel and the Lion's Den. The book has all of those same illustrations that are signature to the Beginner's Bible collection, including fun, wide eyed Bible characters to appeal to younger ages

Daniel and the Lion's Den is part of the I Can Read series. It's on the emergent reader level, which is wonderful for my son for when he is ready to read on his own. We have a few different I Can Read books, including a few that are part of the Zonderkidz series, so this is a nice addition to our Bible based early reading collection.

There are a total of five different levels in the I Can Read series:

  • My First: Basic language, word repetition, and whimsical illustrations, ideal for sharing with your emergent reader.

  • Level 1: Short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own.

  • Level 2: Engaging stories, longer sentences, and language play for developing readers who still need some help.

  • Level 3: Complex plots, challenging vocabulary, and high-interest topics for the independent reader.

  • Level 4: Short paragraphs, chapters, and exciting themes for the perfect bridge to chapter books.

The text is rather large with only one to two simple sentences on each page. Even with the simplicity of the text, which is wonderful for beginning readers, nothing is taken away from the actual story of Daniel. Told in an age appropriate way for younger ages, children will learn what it means to have unwavering faith and confidence in God to protect us.

My Bible Story Coloring Book contains 32 beloved Bible stories with coloring pages to make the Bible come alive for young children.
My Bible Story Coloring Book offers a really nice collection of Bible stories all told in the easy to read New International Readers Version (NIrV) translation. In fact, the text is taken straight from the Bible, so the stories are very true to their original likeness. Some of the coloring pages do offer a lot of intricate details, so it's safe to say this one would be more suitable for children, perhaps ages seven or older. With all of the lines and detailing, it sort of reminds me of an adult coloring book, only made for children. The Bible story text is also a bit lengthy, again something that would be better suited for older children who have a better grasp with reading. Of course that doesn't stop us. My preschooler loves  to flip through the pages as I read the Bible stories aloud to him.

I also like the overall layout of this coloring book, which takes a somewhat different approach than starting with stories from Genesis through Revelation. While there is some type of order to this, the thirty-two stories are actually divided by four categories, Covenant History, Prophets, Writings, and New Testament. There's even a handy table of contents in the beginning, which shows the title of each Bible story included.

One small addition I would have included is a notation on where each story can be found in the Bible. While some are more obvious, others may not be unless children are very familiar with the entire Bible. This would be a nice feature to help them do further research on their own. All in all, this is a beautiful coloring book. The outline images are fun and very appealing to children. What a great way to get their daily dose of Bible study in, as they enjoy a little coloring fun! I think it's also a wonderful way for kids to pick up and retain information about what they're reading.
