Sharing God's Purpose with Young Readers: The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids By Rick Warren

From a movie inspired by a true story of faith to a sweet board book for little ones, there has been a lot of discussion about The Purpose Driven Life on my blog, lately. Did you know that this book is the second most-translated one in the world, after the Bible? That's pretty impressive! I personally own an older edition of this inspirational bestseller, so I was very excited to hear that author, Rick Warren, had recently written The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids.

The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids includes 365 devotions that tie to the themes and ideas found in the bestselling The Purpose Driven Life. Written at a third to fourth grade level, each devotion includes a Scripture, short message, and prayer or thought for the day to help kids discover who they are in God’s eyes. Capturing the hearts of the new generation means ensuring they know their purpose and grow up confident of their value in God and their relationship to Christ. God created each of his children with a purpose in mind … the time is now to, thoughtfully and prayerfully, start the incredible journey to finding that reason.

Dr. Rick Warren is pastor, author, global strategist, theologian, and philanthropist. His book The Purpose driven Life has been called the bestselling non-fiction hardback in publishing history by Publishers Weekly, having sold more than 32 million copies. Warren founded Saddleback Church in 1980 with his wife, Kay. In addition to a 120-acre campus in Lake Forest, CA, the church has ten satellite campuses in Southern California and three international campuses.

Rick Warren actually includes six purposes in The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids, rather than the original five that were discussed in the adult version:

  • Purpose 1: The Reason for Everything
  • Purpose 2: Faith and Friendship with God
  • Purpose 3: Your Part in God's Family
  • Purpose 4: Becoming Like Christ
  • Purpose 5: Serving God, Serving Others
  • Purpose 6: You Were Made for a Mission

I love it when an author decides to take one of their bestselling books and rewrite a similar version specifically made for children. A lot of faith based authors are doing this lately, and it's such an amazing thing!

The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids is a nicely put together hardcover book. It is specifically made for kids, ages 9 through 12. There are no major illustrations included, but in a book like this there really doesn't need to be. The text is written in way that children can easily follow along to. They'll also relate to the real life circumstances and examples discussed throughout. There are 365 different devotions included in this book, one for each day of the year. Young readers will find the reading so enjoyable, they may not want to wait until the next day to move on to another devotion. Each devotion starts off with a scripture verse, followed by the thought of the day, and a short prayer to recite.

One thing that stood out for me was a page in the back of the book that discussed Rick Warren's reasons for incorporating scripture verses from many different Bible translations (including Contemporary English Version, English Standard Version, New International Version, Today's English Version, etc.), rather than just one. He didn't want a message to be missed due to varying interpretations, so he carefully picked different verses from multiple translations to get his main focus across.

"Your life is worth taking the time to think about. And God is worth knowing, because he's the only one who can give your life real meaning."

The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids makes for the perfect companion to any Bible study curriculum, but is also an excellent daily devotional. Children will really appreciate learning God's true purpose for them in their lives. As an adult, I personally enjoyed reading this book and found it to be very inspiring–just like the original version. I'm really looking forward to the day when I can gift this to my son (when he's a bit older). If you have older children in your life, this book would make a wonderful gift for them, especially during this upcoming Easter holiday.
