A Promise is a Promise by Knister {Picture Book Review}

As a mom and a book reviewer, I receive my fair share of some pretty awesome children's books. Sometimes there's one that comes our way that offers a simple, yet powerful story that really sticks with us. That's how I felt after reading A Promise is a Promise by Knister.

After a long winter's hibernation, Bruno the marmot wakes up to discover the most beautiful dandelion outside his burrow. The two quickly become friends and when the dandelion asks Bruno to help her, he has to trust her that everything will be fine. So, as she asks, he blows her seeds away into the wind, only to find that he's left without a friend anymore. He's sad at the loss of his dandelion, but after another winter's sleep, he wakes to find a wonderful surprise. This is an endearing book that shows the power of a promise.

Knister is the stage name of Ludger Jochmann, who was born in 1952 in Bottrop, Germany. He is a musician, actor and author, with a strong commitment to special education and children's theater. Knister has written more than 40 books since 1980, which have been translated into over 30 languages.

I don't know what it is, but this story really made me emotional (Hey, I'm not ashamed to admit that even as an adult I sometimes get emotional over a children's book). Perhaps it's the unlikely friendship that develops between a marmot and a dandelion, and their love for one another. It could also be the message about having faith, even during the most difficult times. There really is a range of emotions in this book from happiness and laughter to sorrow and grief, and finally wonder and surprise.

In addition to such a sweet story, we really enjoyed the whimsical illustrations full of beautiful bright colors. Eva Tharlet did the artwork for this book. She has a true gift for illustrating children's books. Recently I shared my review for Will You Still Love Me If...?, another precious picture book which she also worked on.

A Promise is a Promise is an endearing tale of friendship and hope. It will remind little ones about the importance of keeping a promise and holding on to trust. We really liked this book, and it's one that my son asks me to read over and over, again. If you are looking for a heartwarming picture book for your little one, then this is definitely one that you'll want to get.
