Stories With a Message to Live By: The Bible and Me Retold by Lois Rock #Kregel

Reading the Bible is not just about learning Biblical history. Of course that is one very important aspect of it, but there is so much more to gain while flipping through the pages. For one, the Bible can be a great source of hope and encouragement for readers both young and old. The accounts throughout tell stories of the Lord's constant love for his children, as well as how we can be saved and someday find our way to heaven when the time is right.

The Bible and Me is a beautiful new book for children that shares many of the Bible's wonderful stories of faith, hope and love. The cover reads, "Stories with a message to live by" and offers an inspirational journey throughout Biblical history.

Lois Rock and Alida Massari have teamed up to create a Bible storybook full of inspiration and delight, sure to elicit moments of contemplation. Thoughtfully written, each section begins with a Bible quote and ends with a prayer or psalm that fits the theme of the story to help readers reflect further on what they've read. Alida Massari's richly colored and deeply peaceful illustrations fit perfectly with the meditative theme. Includes twenty stories from the Old and New Testaments.

Lois Rock has established an international reputation as a children's writer. Specializing in Bible stories, prayer books, and information books, her books have been translated into over thirty languages with sales approaching four million copies. She draws on her experience as a mother of three and as a leader of church children's groups.

Alida Massari is an award-winning artist who studied illustration at the European Institute of Design in Rome. She finds inspiration from ancient art and architecture. She describes her work as modern with an ancient atmosphere.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. For starters, it is absolutely beautiful! I have become such a fan of Alida Massari's work. I would totally hang her artwork up throughout my home. Some folks may remember my review of Angels in the Bible Storybook. She was responsible for the gorgeous illustrations in that book and she does not disappoint with this one, either. God has truly blessed her with a great talent.

Lois Rock has done a wonderful job with retelling some of the Bible's most noteworthy and amazing stories from both the Old and New Testaments. From the Book of Genesis to Revelation, children will learn about God's great works and be inspired to live day by day in His word.

While this may not necessarily be a children's book meant for beginners, since there is quite a bit of text throughout, each story still offers an engaging reading experience for younger children. I personally read it to my toddler and it is written in such a way that he will sit there and listen attentively. I like that each story begins with a connecting Bible verse. The end of each story is my favorite part, because it either includes a correlating excerpt taken from the Bible or a prayer that is inspired by the story. This allows children to reflect on what they've just read, while offering extra encouragement, as well. For example, the story of the Good Samaritan is one that's in this book. The beginning offers scripture from Luke 6:31.

Jesus said, "Do for others just what you want them to do for you.

After the story, there is a prayer asking God to remind us to always be helpful to those in need and never pretend that we don't see them. There is also Bible scripture from James 3:17-18:

But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace.

The physical book is a hardcover and has approximately 128 pages. There is a dedication page in the beginning, perfect for gifting the book to a child. A table of contents is also included, so that readers can flip to their favorite stories. I do like that it does end with a story about Revelation. I really appreciate it when children's books based on Biblical stories don't omit this part of the Bible. It offers a glimpse of our current times and what's yet to come, and I think it's very important for children to know this.

Whether you are still reading to your child or they can read on their own, The Bible and Me is a wonderful book for kids of all ages that offers a glimpse of the Lord's undying love for us.
