Help Breathe New Life Into Your Homeschool Routine: Homeschool Rescue Review

As a mom who's just started homeschooling, I've yet to experience any extreme struggles with our day to day tasks. Having said that, my son is still quite young and we do have a long journey ahead of us. Although I've always been a glass "half full" type of person, that doesn't mean that I still don't get discouraged from time to time. I often turn to prayer to ease my worries. Of course, it's nice to also hear advice right from the mouths of seasoned homeschoolers who have already been there. Recently, I've been working through an encouraging online course from Only Passionate Curiosity called Homeschool Rescue.

Creator and Owner, Heather Aliano, is a blogger, mother, and homeschooler, herself. She had created Homeschool Rescue as a source of encouragement for homeschooling parents who may be feeling overwhelmed in their homeschooling routine. It's a practical course that allows parents to take an honest look at themselves, their children, and even their home environment to see where obstacles may lie and how these can possibly be improved, in order to make the entire homeschooling process run smoothly for everyone involved.

This 60 day self-paced course contains five modules, covering different topics to work through. Each module offers three to five lessons that include a video session, homework worksheets, and plenty of other helpful resources, such as quizzes, educational sites, homeschooling and housekeeping cheat sheets, checklists, and so much more! The videos are short and sweet, but for added convenience there's also an audio version and pdf transcript of each lesson. This is quite helpful, just in case you don't have the time to watch a lesson, there's always the option of listening to it or reading the transcript.

Now I know what you are thinking. "Wait, back up, Kelly! Did you say homework? What?! I don't have time for homework!" I will let you in on a little secret, I actually felt the same way. That is, of course, until I took a look at what the homework entailed. You see, this aspect of the course wasn't created to pile on more work for us, but rather provide us with tools to help us get back on track and tackle any individual obstacles in our personal lives that may also be hindering our ability to homeschool. Some of these assignments include game plans to deal with our worst days, worksheets with ways to create a homeschool mission statement, a curriculum checkup and school supply inventory, and even ways to put together a pacing guide for lesson plans. It turns out, this is homework that I actually enjoy doing!

I especially appreciate the topics discussed in Module 2, which include time management and maintaining a proper balance in our lives. The first lesson begins with how to say "no" to things and why it's okay to do so. This is a problem that I tend to run into on a very frequent basis, so I found a lot of Heather's ideas and insights very encouraging. For instance, when we say "yes" to something, then we risk saying "no" to something else that may be more important. The lessons in this module also focus on de-cluttering and organizing. This is a subject that's near and dear to my heart, since I have such a type A personality and a joy for keeping things in order. My husband playfully teases me about this every so often, because I get unusually excited about labels, spreadsheets, and storage bins. Of course not everyone shares my love for organizing and that's totally okay! If you are one of those people who doesn't, then Module 2 will definitely speak to you and help get you back on track to a better way to balance and manage your life.

Along with the complete 60 day eCourse, registration also includes several other bonuses that are definitely worth mentioning. These include:

  • The private Homeschool Rescue Facebook Group, where you'll not only receive extra ideas and inspiration from Heather, but additional encouragement from other members who can offer their personal insight. It's also a great place to network with other homeschoolers.
  • Tons of planners to choose from–ten to be exact! Take your pick at one, or mix and match to your liking, since these are all included in your course membership.
  • A Student Accountability Packet that offers calendar pages where children can keep track of their course assignments and even their daily household chores.

Another thing that's worth mentioning about this program is the fact that Heather puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of taking care of ourselves and making time for us. This topic of discussion is brought up in several different lessons as a friendly reminder. It resonated with me, personally, because I'm the kind of person who likes to put others before me, and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, I often find that it leaves little time for me to do the extracurricular things that I enjoy doing. It's not something that I particularly dwell on, but she does make an eye-opening point that having time for ourselves is equally important, since it helps us de-stress and avoid burn out. As she also mentions in her course, "If mom isn't happy, no one is happy."

Whether someone has been homeschooling for one year or seventeen years, we all encounter different seasons in our lives. Sometimes things are hunky dory, while there are other times challenges can present themselves. We all know life isn't always going to be peaches and cream. Even though we've yet to go through any tough seasons in our personal homeschooling journey, as a new homeschooler, I prefer to be prepared for any potential challenges that may come our way, so that I can tackle them head on. Having the right tools and resources to keep me on track and ready for what's to come is really what makes this course so great!
