Slow Down by Nicole Nordeman {Book Review}

I'm definitely a sentimental person, especially when it comes to parenting. You know the type that gets overly emotional about even the littlest things like a first haircut or growing out of those cute pair of loafers? Yeah, that's pretty much me! Kids grow up so fast–it's like time is zooming by at a rapid pace, you almost don't want to blink. Perhaps that's why I can relate to Nicole Nordeman's song, Slow Down, so well. I recently talked about this song a few weeks ago when I was sharing her latest album. When I saw that she was also releasing a book inspired by her hit song, I knew that I had to be one of the first in line to grab a copy.

It’s inevitable: your child reaches a new milestone, and you would give anything for time to simply slow down. Nichole Nordeman, bestselling Christian singer-songwriter and worship leader on the Belong Tour, captures these feelings and more in her new book Slow Down, based on the hit song that resonated with millions of parents around the world.

Nichole Nordeman is a Christian recording artist and songwriter with numerous number-one and top ten singles to her credit and cumulative CD sales of over one million. A two-time Gospel Music Association winner for Female Vocalist of the Year, she has won a total of nine Dove Awards. She lives with her family in Oklahoma.

If you are anything like me, then you may want to grab some tissues before you watch this precious video of Slow Down:

There's no way I could resist reading a book that I knew was going to tug at my heartstrings, Slow Down is a beautiful book that shares stories of Nichole's life as a mother, as well as other guest writers who also share some notes of mothering wisdom. I always enjoy reading real life stories of the day to day happenings of other mothers, because it makes me think of my own life. It's a great way to relate with others and really reflect on those special moments...smiling, crying, and laughing along the way.

Nichole and the other contributors in this book offer readers a very candid look into their own lives as parents. There's a lot of honest reflections shared in this book, and I think that's why I loved it so much. I enjoy being a mother and live for it, so I couldn't help, but relate and actually feel a warm connection to the stories. It was almost like I was chatting with friends over a cup of coffee as they shared their life and personal parenting moments with me. The book is sorted by chapters with different themes like realizing that you can't control every situation or that it's okay to say "I don't know" to a question that your child may ask you. This is not a parenting self-help book, instead, it's a collection of true stories and anecdotes that will warm your heart. The book also serves as a sort of journal. At the end of each chapter there are areas that allow you write down your own thoughts and reflections.

Slow Down is a celebration to mothers everywhere! What Nicole conveys in both her song and this book is something that personally resonates with me. The extra spaces for journaling also make this a wonderful gift and keepsake. Being a mother is such a gift from God. I thank Him each and every day for the blessing that He has given me, and there's not a moment where I take that for granted. There really isn't anything better than being with our children–watching them grow and flourish, and being right there by their side every step of the way.
