Classic Hymns Read and Reflect with the Classics

We have such a love for music and enjoying singing songs throughout the day, especially those that preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It had recently dawned on me that one of the things missing from our own library of Christian books was a nice hymnal. Recently we had the opportunity to review a beautiful new book Classic Hymns Read and Reflect with the Classics. This one is all that I could ask for and more, because it doesn't only contain a collection of ninety classic hymns, but it's an actual Bible study, as well.

Dive into the profound lyrics of classic Christian hymns that have stood the test of time! Influencing spiritual pilgrims of all ages for even centuries, each song is accompanied by reflection and Bible study questions as well as prayer and journaling prompts. A great gift for believers who love music! 188 pages, hardcover from B&H.

Every hymn starts with a notation on who wrote the lyrics and the music. The end of each song displays three additional sections, that include Bible Study Questions, Personal Reflection Questions, and a prayer. These additional areas allow the reader to delve deeper into the meaning of each song by reading Bible passages and answering questions.

I wanted the opportunity to teach my son some of the traditional Christian hymns that I remember throughout my life. Truth be told, I didn't grow up in the church when I was really young, so some of the hymns included were ones that were also new to me. Even though this is a book for adults, there is no better time to start learning praise and worship music than at a young age. My son has already shown such a joy for this music, so I wanted a resource that will teach him the classics. Even though he is really young, this is an excellent book for him to grow up with and learn from. I also feel blessed to have the chance to learn some of these with him.

The fabric hardcover exterior gives this book an almost traditional feel that offers a bit of nostalgia. I was pleased to see a few personal favorites included such as What a Friend We Have in Jesus and Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. I even spotted several Christmas songs such as Joy to the World! The Lord Is Come and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing. Needless to day, we'll definitely be keeping this out on the coffee table for worship and praise during the Christmas season.

The fact that this book offers a Bible study is extremely important to me. Not only do we get to learn the lyrics to some of the most cherished worship and praise music ever written, but we also have the opportunity to study the meaning and inspiration behind each song. That, to me, goes much deeper than just knowing the words. Of course, it's easy to get pulled into the beauty of the song lyrics as we sing and give praise, but I just love the fact that I can also study the Biblical truths behind each song and discover an even deeper meaning. Eventually I will be able to also invite my son to take part in these studies with me, which is such a joy to look forward to.
