The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! DVD Review + GIVEAWAY

Every year we ring the month of March in with a celebration of National Reading Month. This is a time that's very near and dear to my heart, given my love of reading. Although we're only in the end of January, there's always fun planning to be done to celebrate our enjoyment of books. Commencement usually begins with a homage to Dr. Seuss, since his birthday falls on March 2nd. We are huge Seuss fans and own quite a collection of books written by him, as well as some by other authors who still continue to spread his legacy.

We're starting our celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss by enjoying the upcoming release of the hit children's show The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Season 2, Volume 1. Hey, even bookworms can enjoy a fun-filled, educational television program, and that's just what this show has to offer.

Enjoy the first volume of the second season of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Show follows the adventures of 6-year-old best friends, Sally and Nick, as they are whisked off on extraordinary voyages of scientific discovery with the Cat in the Hat. Thanks to the Thinga-ma-jigger and our friends, exploring has never been more exciting! In this volume, kids will learn the answers to questions like what causes day to change into night, why do we sneeze, and what makes our heart beat. And the discoveries don't end there! We learn about why animal ears come in many shapes and sizes, how different animals carry their babies, who are the fastest creatures in the world, why male crickets chirp, what feathers are used for and so much more! So let's go, go, go, go on an adventure, we're flying with The Cat in the Hat today!

We're no strangers to The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, since we always enjoy catching it on our local public broadcasting station. The show includes some of our favorite Seuss characters, not just the Cat, but even Thing One and Thing Two join in on the adventures from time to time. And here's a fun fact that I never even realized, Martin Short does the voice for the Cat. I don't know how I could have missed that one, but what a surprise!

The episodes revolve around two friends, Nick and Sally (and of course the Cat). Each day is a new learning adventure that starts with a quick trip in the Cat's Thinga-ma-jigger, a magical vehicle that transports the kids to a special time or place where they can learn more about the topic of the day. The show offers a learning discovery for both children, and sometimes even the adults who are watching it with them.

In The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Season 2, Volume 1, viewers will learn:

  • The different protection mechanisms found in various species of plants and animals.
  • How cats are not the only animals that purr. No, in fact, elephants actually do so when they say hello to each other.
  • The gravity on the Moon is lower than Earth's.
  • That crocodile mom is not getting ready to eat those babies sitting in her mouth...nope, that's actually how she carries them around.
  • Sneezing is a natural defense to keep foreign particles and other irritants out of the body.
  • How night and day correlate with the spinning of the Earth and it's position to the sun.

These are just a few neat facts that kids will learn about in Season 2, Volume 1. This is a two-disk DVD set that contains twenty episodes (220 minutes) of fun, educational entertainment.

Even though the original The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, series only first aired in 2010, there's a feeling of nostalgia that I get every time we watch it. I grew up loving Dr. Seuss books–of course, The Cat in the Hat being just one of my favorites. Creating a television program dedicated to continuing the legacy of this classic cartoon character is pretty neat. It shares that same adventurous style from the original book series, but offers so much more by adding a wealth of fun facts to help young minds grow in their knowledge from a variety of different subjects.

The Cat in the Hat has been a popular character in children's literature for decades!

It definitely has been! I think that's what of the wonders of the series. I know I personally enjoy sharing something that I loved as a child with my own child. :-)
