A Dedicated Radio Station for Children: Smart Kidz Radio {Review}

Pin It

My son just loves listening to music! That's why I'm extra careful when choosing what he can or can't listen to. I always make sure that he's only exposed to wholesome and clean entertainment. Luckily, there are some options out there that I can feel comfortable playing around my entire family. One of the latest outlets that we've been using is called Smart Kidz Radio. It was created by the folks over at Smart Kidz Media, who know a lot about developing educational entertainment specifically made for children.

Smart Kidz Radio is a free online radio station created especially for kids. It offers a collection of various programming to give children a fun and entertaining way to listen to music and stories. The best part, since it's specifically geared towards kids, I don't have to worry about something playing on-air that I wouldn't want my son to hear. Everything that's offered is age-appropriate, wholesome, and aligns with positive values and virtues. Signing up to listen is so simple and easy–plus, it's free! Just create a login, and you and your child are on your way to listening.

The music included on the station is a lot of fun to listen to, and what's great is that each song teaches something new to children. After every few songs, you'll hear an introduction about a specific topic, followed by a handful of songs related to that very same topic. Sometimes the topics are about friendship, other times they teach about kindness, respect, or how to deal with different types of feelings. There's also educational songs that relate to topics such as learning math (how to count) and the alphabet. You can even hear songs about the importance of taking care of yourself and your body by proper grooming, eating healthy foods, etc.

This radio station definitely offers plenty of topics on positive values! We were just listening to a group of songs about how parents are people with emotions, too. The songs then go on to teach kids to show respect and appreciate them. It was actually a really nice message to send to children to remind them of just how important their parents can be in their lives.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is a live radio station, so using the pause button will only stop the program on your computer, but not stop the actual song that's currently playing. I've found that when continuously listening to the station, we'll sometimes hear songs repeated, which is nice since we're becoming familiar with them. We love to sing songs that we've learned in our home, and with positive song titles such as Kindness and Respect and May I, Please, Thank You we welcome the repeats. One of the things that I would like to see added is an actual title listing of the songs that are currently playing, and maybe even a previously played song list.

One of our absolute favorite features of Smart Kidz Radio is their offering of free podcasts, which include plenty of classic children's stories such as Alice in Wonderland, Rumpelstiltskin, and Goldilocks and The Three Bears. These are essentially audio books offered online, complete with narration, music, and sound effects. The narration is wonderful, because the voices change in tone and pitch to match the different characters in a story. This allows each tale to come to life. One of the characteristics that I personally like about these stories is that they have a nostalgic old-time feel to them, almost like a broadcast you'd hear on the radio back in the 1930s or 40s. There's something extra special about listening to these. We had a lot of fun with them!

Another feature that I especially appreciate with the stories is that each one ends on a positive note with a moral to every one. For instance, Cinderella teaches the importance of forgiveness (Cinderella forgiving her stepmother and stepsisters for being so mean to her) and Goldilocks and the Three Bears teaches about being thoughtful of other people (and their belongings) and how they might feel.

In addition to the free online radio station, Smart Kidz Media will also be rolling out their On-demand program in the near future, which is something we'll be sure to keep a look out for. According to their website, there will be over 1,000 extra children’s songs and stories available.

  • Early Learning Radio Program (Ages 2 – 4)
  • Good Behavior Skills Radio Program (Ages 3 – 6)

All in all, we've been enjoying our listening sessions with Smart Kidz Radio. My kindergartener just loves the music, and especially enjoys the story time sessions that we play from their children's podcast collection. These are also my personal favorite, too. Of course, I really appreciate the positive tunes that play on their live station. I don't have to worry about what my child is listening to while this is playing. In fact, he's even learning while listening, so it's a win win for all of us!

It is hard to find songs on the radio that kids can listen to! Even some of the ones that claim they are for kids, have songs on them I wouldn't want my son listening to. So, this one sounds like a great one to try out. Since they have some learning songs on them too, I may have to check them out to see if I can find some new ones for when I'm subbing.

That game does look like a lot of fun! I can definitely see how itwould give you a bit of anxiety, though! LOL!! :-D

I know exactly what you mean. I remember stumbling upon one supposed "kids" station a while back. Most of the songs were just kids doing remakes of adult songs found on secular radio stations. Some were okay, but others not so much. This station is nice, because it's strictly for kids. The podcasts are a nice inclusion, too!
