Dr. Seuss's You Are Kind {Book Review}

It's no secret that we're major fans of Dr. Seuss books. Recently, I received the announcement that a new book was set to be released featuring one of our favorite Seuss characters, Horton the Elephant. Of course, we couldn't wait to get our hands on this new release. The book is called Dr. Seuss's You Are Kind, and is inspired by the quote from the classic book, Horton Hears a Who:

"A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

From Horton the Elephant—who taught us that “a person’s a person, no matter how small”—comes this sweet, small hardcover book of simple, unrhymed observations about the qualities of kindness. Illustrated with full-color art by Dr. Seuss from the books Horton Hears a Who!, Horton Hatches the Egg, and the story “Horton and the Kwuggerbug,” it’s great for thanking and inspiring people of all ages.

As a mother, it's important for me to instill positive values and character traits that my son will carry out throughout his life. Being kind to others is just one of the many attributes that every child should learn. While this book is not originally written by the author, nor does it follow the traditional rhyming prose of many of the classic Dr. Seuss books that we personally know and love, You Are Kind is a precious reminder of what it means to be thoughtful of others and how the littlest act of kindness can really brighten someone's day.

The physical book, itself, is small in size and uses short sentences with large text to convey its sweet, simple, and right to the point message. This makes it the perfect introduction for younger children on what it means to be selfless and caring to others.

"You are Kind. You are an amazing friend...
You teach that everyone matters."

One of our favorite characteristics of this book is that it actually includes original illustrations from classics such as Horton Hatches the Egg, Horton and the Kwuggerbug, and Horton Hears a Who! We had fun glancing over the artwork and trying to figure out which book each illustration came from. We even pulled out some of the ones that we had already owned to compare and contrast. We have an old copy of Horton Hatches the Egg that was revised in 1968, so it was interesting to see the slight differences between the newer book and the old one, which mostly consist of color variances and updated enhancements.

While You Are Kind is a children's book that offers examples of what it means to be compassionate and considerate to others, it's written as though it is speaking to the reader, sort of thanking them for their thoughtfulness. Telling the story in such a way, also makes it a wonderful gift and token of appreciation for just about anyone at any age, especially for an individual who's made a great impact in another person's life.
