A Treasure Hunt Through God's Word with the NIrV Seek and Explore Holy Bible

Happy 2019! It's hard to believe that another year has gone by! We are starting the new year off just right, spending quality time with family and making sure to immerse ourselves in God's Word. Just recently my son was blessed with the new NIrV Seek and Explore Holy Bible. The New International Reader's Version is wonderful for younger children, because it's actually translated on a third grade reading level. This particular Bible also has a ton of extra features to appeal to various types of learners, since it incorporates nine familiar learning styles.

About the Book:
The NIrV Seek and Explore Holy Bible is about engaging the child’s whole being—heart, soul, and mind. This Bible helps children understand God’s Word by utilizing the nine common ways that children learn: Logical reasoning; Visualizing; Discussing and debating; Learning with others and using interpersonal skills; Reflection or intrapersonal skills; Emotional engagement; Experimenting and doing; Kinesthetics; and Nature. Children are joined on their journey through the Bible by nine different animal friends who are each designed to help kids use one of the nine different ways of learning. Endearing art of an antelope, monkey, African elephant, meerkat, hippo, tiger, jaguar, panda bear, and zebra guide children from “Base Camp” to the different sites throughout the Bible that lead them through the story of God’s people.

I really like the single column feature, because it's less confusing for children and makes it more familiar, just as if they were reading through a chapter book. The added bold headings help highlight various stories and events throughout Biblical history. I've always appreciated when Bibles include this. It's a good way to find certain stories in a breeze, and is especially helpful for those who are new to reading the Bible. The font size is offered in 8.75. This is not exceptionally large for a children's Bible, but it's not the tiniest that I've ever seen, either. It would have been nice to have the font a little larger, but doing so would also make the overall thickness of this Bible increase quite a bit. Since the page count is already large, the smaller font provides a happy medium.

The soft cover version is nice, because it gives this Bible more flexibility, but I do wish it were a bit more durable. The cover is make of thick card stock material, but in time, I could see this ripping even after being careful. There is a presentation page in the beginning, which is always nice, especially when gifting this to someone. I also love that this includes an introduction to each book in the Bible. This is a feature that I tend to really favor in all Bibles across the board. It gives the reader a brief background on what the book is about, along with outlines of noteworthy events and people that they'll be reading about. This is another feature that is especially helpful for those who are new to reading the Bible.

One of my very favorite features is the fact that this Bible includes colorful and vibrant illustrations throughout. The back area offers three age appropriate Bible maps. These are similar to what you would typically find in an adult Bible, but are instead created with illustrations and imagery to make it more child-friendly.

Maps That are Offered Include:
  • The Exodus Journey
  • Paul's Life and Ministry
  • The Ministry of Jesus

Additional Features Include:
  • A listing of some of the more important Bible stories worth reading
  • Scripture passage highlights throughout
  • An illustrated outline of all the books in the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. These break down Israel's Covenant History, Israel's Prophets, Stories About Jesus, Letters from Paul, etc.

There are plenty of features to go around in the NIrV Seek and Explore Holy Bible, but the ultimate highlight is the overall theme that is mentioned on the cover. You see, children are encouraged to seek and explore the events in the Bible through a treasure hunt training camp that is guided by nine new animal friends called the Wayees. Their names are Talky, Thinky, Arty, Crafty, Hummy, Inny, Joinme, Greeny, and Hearty. Each Wayee is unique and no two are the same. The character traits, strengths, and interests of each Wayee are introduced prior to the Biblical text. Some have a knack for art or music, some for thinking logically, some like to talk a lot, and others are goal setters. As children read through each book in the Bible, they will find special color coded boxes with various prompts from different Wayees. These offer special challenges to highlight what is being read at that moment. Some will ask children to examine their feelings, or the feelings of Biblical figures from a story. Other prompts with engage kids in deeper discussion, and some will even suggest a fun arts and crafts project. The main idea behind the Wayees and the included prompt boxes, is to help appeal to different types of learning styles.

Learning Styles Incorporated Include:
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Visualizing
  • Discussing and Debating
  • Learning with Others and Using Interpersonal Skills
  • Reflection or Intrapersonal Skills
  • Emotional Engagement
  • Experimenting and Doing

  • Nature

With plenty of extras and features that take children on an educational adventure, the NIrV Seek and Explore Holy Bible is a fun and engaging way to learn God's Word
