We Are the Gardeners Picture Book by Joanna Gaines {+ GIVEAWAY}

With the spring season here, not only are we super excited about the warmer weather, but we also enjoy watching everything come back to life. The grass turns a vibrant green, again. The trees sprout new buds and the flowers begin blooming petals in all sorts of pretty colors. We also enjoy reading books about spring, nature, and the great outdoors. Just recently, we had the chance to read Joanna Gaines' very first children's book, We Are the Gardeners.

What I love about this book is that it not only offers children a quick glimpse into the dedication that maintaining a garden entails, but it also contains an underlying message with a moral to the story.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In We Are the Gardeners, Joanna and the kids chronicle the adventures of starting their own family garden. From their failed endeavors, obstacles to overcome (bunnies that eat everything!), and all the knowledge they have gained along the way, the Gaines family shares how they learned to grow a happy, successful garden. As it turns out, trying something new is not always easy, but the hardest work often yields the greatest reward. There are always new lessons to be learned in the garden!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Joanna Gaines is the co-founder of Magnolia, a home and lifestyle brand that she started with her husband, Chip, in 2003. She is the bestselling author of The Magnolia Story, Magnolia Table, and Homebody, as well as editor-in-chief of Magnolia Journal, a lifestyle magazine offering inspiration for your life and home. The Gaineses, along with their five kids, live on a farm in Waco, Texas, where they enjoy caring for their bustling family garden.

This book is a true glimpse into how Joanna and her family started their own garden. We began reading about the small fern that the family had owned. It was their first "family" plant and the children learned a thing or two about taking care of one, including how important it is to never give up when things don't necessarily turn out for the best. This soon sparked a passion for taking care of plants, and eventually inspired them to take this enjoyment outdoors where the Gaines family created their very own garden, complete with fruits, vegetables, and beautiful flower blooms.

As the years went on, the family's garden grew immensely and really thrived. Of course, there were several challenges that had occurred along the way. It was up to the Gaines family to either throw in the towel, or persevere and overcome the obstacles that stood before them.

...every failure or setback teaches you something. Dad says that every hard thing we choose to do MAKES US BRAVER for the next time.

The physical book is gorgeous and the quality is amazing! It has a sturdy hardcover with a green cloth spine and thick interior pages. The colorful illustrations are beautiful and whimsical– they really help complement the story and bring everything to life for children.

I love that this book serves many purposes. For one, it's an all-around fun children's tale to read, but it is so much more than that. Kids will receive a small lesson about plants, what they need to thrive, and the diligence that is required on the gardener's part to keep them thriving. Of course, my favorite aspect of this book is the important life lesson that it offers. It reminds the reader that life may not always turn out the way we had originally planned. When we encounter failure or roadblocks, we have the choice to give up, or carry on, despite whatever obstacles we face. The story in this book parallels a bigger meaning as we see the Gaines family learn about hard work and dedication. It's a story to help encourage children and remind them that they, too, can face whatever comes their way, and that they should never relinquish–even if things don't quite work out the way they had initially expected.

When I think about the message in this book, one particular Bible verse does come to mind:

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. –2 Chronicles 15:7
